Enter the CAL Semi-Automated Liquid Transfer System from BioSero, LLC. For a minimal investment, the CAL System and Transfer Assistant software, that comes standard on a touch-screen tablet installed on the system, provides a laser tracking system that can track any manual transfer of tubes, liquids, or solids. The laser can target sources and destinations (down to a 384 well plate) to do cherry picking, tube transfers, tip loading, etc. Simply put, the CAL is an automated laser pointer guided by an intuitive sample tracking and mapping software. To operate the CAL, a simple press on the foot pedal moves the laser to the next position while allowing both hands to perform other tasks. The CAL was originally designed to track source-to-destination microtube transfers in 96-well racks with BioSero’s microtube picker. This is important to understand because the CAL and its software is not limited to pipetting assistance or tube transfers, but can give help in many applications. One of the original customers had a liquid handler that was consistently missing wells. He mapped the wells that were missed each time, used the map in CAL’s software and was able to quickly load randomly scattered tips to the appropriate positions in the tip rack with the assistance of the laser.
Performance of the CAL has allowed customers using a cherry-picking method to complete their process in as little as 1 hour compared to 4 hours before using the CAL, a 75% reduction in time! Another great aspect is the ability to track transfers and produce a file map, an aspect normally reserved for automation set-ups.
