Enabling Sustainable Laboratory Practices through Flexible Automation
Tuesday, January 26
3:45 p.m. EST

Carleen Klumpp-Thomas, MS, Automation Group Leader, NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences

Improvements in laboratory sustainability have been desperately needed for some time but more so now that we are living in the midst of a global pandemic. This has brought the issue to the forefront of our attention as we struggle with supply shortages of many consumables employed in the scientific field especially those used in high-throughput processes such as pipette tips. Advancements in technology through software, collaborative robotics and peripheral devices along with NCATS’ existing effective optimized cleaning methods has allowed the harnessing of flexible automation in order to continuously supply washed pipette tips for reuse on robotic systems or standalone liquid handlers which utilize hundreds of thousands of pipette tips each year for ongoing sample preparation processes. This has enabled enhanced laboratory sustainability while creating further opportunities to increase productivity.

The world of life sciences, especially R&D, is fluid and exploratory by nature. Experiments and workflows change all the time—and that typically doesn’t play well with automation systems, which require some rigidity to run at scale. In this talk, we’ll go over various tips we’ve developed over time to use automation in tandem with R&D by embracing the uncertainty and using “unfinished” systems to run “unfinished” science.
